Source of Servanthood

Scripture:

John 13:3 “Jesus knew that the Father had given him authority over everything and that he had come from God and would return to God.”

Observation:

We just did a mini study on this verse working through Leadership Essentials, a workbook the staff is going through. The focus was about the servant heart of a leader. The author used this verse to point out that, to truly serve, the leader must have a firm grounding in his identity. Finding that identity in God, realizing our value as a child of God, gives us the ability to serve. Why? Presumably because the intrinsic value over-rides the value derived from what we do. I’m not sure this is necessarily the primary motivation for service. Actually, come to think of it, the motivation comes from verse 1 in this chapter: “…Jesus knew that the time had come for him to leave this world … [and so] he now showed them the full extent of his love.” Christ didn’t serve because of his value to God, but because of deep love for those around him. Whether we are fully aware of and embrace our value as children of God is less relevant to our ability to serve than our love for the other. Further motivation could be better found in grasping that those around us are children of God.

Prayer:

Lord, give me true, deep love for those around me.

Strength in Weakness

Scripture:

2 Corinthians 12:10 “That is why, for Christ’s sake, I delight in weakness.  For when I am weak, then I am strong.”

Observation:

No one jumps to my mind as a good example of this – and I guess that doesn’t surprise me.  My bible says “I am content in my weakness.”  There is really no point in our lives when we’re taught to delight in or be content with our weaknesses.  Perhaps accept them, but only grudgingly, and strive to overcome, or pray that God removes it from our life.  But not to delight in it.  Paul says a couple things about weakness:

  • Keeps us from becoming conceited
  • God’s grace is sufficient
  • It allows Christ’s power to rest on us

Application:

I want each of those apparent in my life.  I don’t want to be conceited, thinking anything other than God’s grace is enough, but instead to feel the power of Christ in my life.  Next time I am faced with my weaknesses, I want to remember I am made complete in God.

Prayer:

Lord, thank you for completing my identity – remind  me of my completeness in you.

Reflecting Praise

Scripture:

Acts 12:23 “Instantly the angel of the Lord struck Herod with a sickness, because he accepted the people’s worship instead of giving the glory to God.”

Application:

I’m not concerned about being struck by God anytime soon; I feel like I handle praise well, but I think too often as I reflect it, it goes more to those around me than the one who made me.  God is the reason for our accomplishments – I want to do a better job giving praise to Him.

Prayer:

Lord, thank you for your splendor and for sharing it with us – truly an honor to be part of your plan.

Love and Lordship

Scripture:

Jeremiah 9:23-24 “Let not the wise man gloat in his wisdom, or the mighty man in his might, or the rich man in his riches.  Let them boast in this alone: that they truly know me and understand that I am the Lord who is just and righteous, whose love is unfailing and that I delight in these things.”

John 13:3-5 “Jesus knew that the Father had given him authority over everything and that he had come from God and would return to God.  So he … washed the disciple’s feet….”

Observation:

Jesus never boasted in his wisdom, he never used his might (at the cost of others), and never sought riches.  However, his knowledge and understanding of God combined with a deep assurance of worth as the Son of God gave him the confidence he needed to humble himself before others.  Much wisdom, ample power, nor extensive riches allow for this, but rather, when celebrated as achievements rather than gifts, are unquenchable pursuits and not fed by acts of servanthood.

Application:

True knowledge of God and understanding of his Lordship over my life should be central and above every aspiration.  Ultimately wisdom, power, and riches will all be leveled and the only thing that will matter is our relationship with Christ.  Perhaps because I don’t see power or riches in my reach, wisdom is my temptation.  In many ways, it is more important to me that people think me wise than that I actually am.  Perhaps because I associate wisdom with understanding of God, I think it can bring me closer to God, but just like power or riches it is worthless.

Prayer:

Lord, let my pride come from my relationship with you.  Then, from the wellspring of understanding your love and lordship, give me the confidence to serve.

It’s Almost Time

Scripture:

Isaiah 56:1 “This is what the Lord says:  Be just and fair to all.  Do what is right and good, for I am coming soon to rescue you and to display my righteousness among you.”

Observation:

Perspective is such a valuable tool in our moral and spiritual development.  When we are able to evaluate a situation against God’s context, criteria, and character, it makes room for love, for forgiveness, and for peace.  So when we consider that he is “coming soon to rescue” us, it makes it easy to “temporarily” humble and sacrifice oneself for the sake of justice, righteousness, and goodness.

Prayer:

Lord, thank you for offering us your perspective, please help me be mindful of your context, your criteria, and your character when I assess and respond to situations.
